Going to Saint John’s Point

McSwyne's Castle in the Distance

McSwyne’s Castle in the Distance

I was quite happy that I was able to make to the fabled secret waterfall in county Donegal. I crawled and waded my way to the waterfall and got my photos. My only regret was that I didn’t have my SLR with me since it would be very challenging to keep your balance and lug around a heavy camera at the same time. Now that I got that out of the way, I started to make my way back. There are a few signs pointing to points of interest and one of the ones I saw was for Saint John’s Point. It seems that it is a narrow strip of land which sticks out into the sea. These places are usually beautiful so I decided to make a detour before heading home.

The road here isn’t very wide and there are parts where only one vehicle would be able to pass, it pays to take your time going there. I can see the sea on the right but the weather doesn’t seem to be cooperating anymore. In fact, I think it may start to rain anytime. I decided to push on. Even if I don’t get to take photos at least I would know what else is here. Lo and behold, there was ruins of an old castle to the right of the road. The castle is actually much closer to the sea as they tend to build them on high ground near the water, probably for defense. This is McSwyne’s Castle. For me, even if the castle is already in ruins, I think it still makes for a nice subject for a photo.
