The Road to Ait Ben-Haddou

When I was looking through the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Morocco, one of them stood out for me – Ait Ben-Haddou. I thought that I can miss everything else as long as I get to go to this place. The photos of Ait Ben-Haddou look very impressive and it is probably what I was looking for when I visited Morocco. I joined a tour group from Marrakesh and they brought us to Ait Ben-Haddou on a bus. The journey was around three to four hours which is not a trivial amount of time. The roads weren’t very good and in fact, a lot of parts were under construction. It is surprising to see that since this is a very well traveled road. If you are unlucky, you might get stuck on the road for hours if there happens to be a landslide. The road traverses the High Atlas mountains and, along the way, visitors can see scenic mountain views.

There is a rest stop along the way for people who want to use the toilet or grab some food. I totally missed breakfast that morning so I had to grab some food. The food here was unsurprisingly expensive, after all, for the vast majority of the time, it would be tourists coming here. Toilet use is also charged so it looks like they are milking every bit from the tourists here. The trip was actually quite exhausting even if I wasn’t driving. I can see how dangerous the road here can be but like everything else you just need to be careful. You cannot drive fast here since the roads are winding. Guard rails as also optional here. But for all that it’s worth, I think the journey was nice since you get to see the Atlas mountains up close.
