Hassan Tower

Hassan Tower

I was surprised to know that the Hassan Tower complex is made of the old and the new. The old is the Hassan Tower itself, while the new one is the mausoleum of Mohammed V. I was actually more interested in the Hassan Tower. The Hassan Tower was designed to be the tallest minaret of its era. Turns out that the tower was never finished. It is only half built but it is already looking very impressive. There was supposed to be the world’s largest mosque built here as well but it was also never completed. What remains here are collonades which are supposed to form the foundations of the mosque.

The great earthquake of Lisbon made sure that the mosque wouldn’t be completed. It is now a heritage site and one of political significance as well. Mohammed V proclaimed the independence of Morocco back then here at Hassan Tower. It would have been nice had they finished the minaret. It would have been an impressive sight to see here in modern Rabat, which doesn’t have a lot of tall buildings. By this time, there were already a lot of people here. There were tour groups which have also been brought here. I’m glad I managed to find this place all by myself. In the meantime, I would like to see the rest of the city of Rabat.
