Inside the Basilica at Volubilis

I seemed to have ended up in what is the center of the ancient city of Volubilis. Not that different from what we have now, the center of the city is apparently lined with important structures. I have seen the Capitoline Temple which is the main place of worship in Volubilis. It isn’t the only place of worship, but it is most probably the most important one in the city. There is another structure here in Volubilis and it is probably the most visible structure in the entire site. The Basilica is the largest structure here and I immediately saw it from far away. Like much of the site of Volubilis, the basilica is mostly ruined but parts of the structure are still intact that it can give you an idea of its former grandeur.

The basilica was said to the finest one in the entire Africa. Keep in mind that the Roman empire extended all the way to Northern Africa. Contrary to what the name may suggest, the basilica isn’t actually a place for worship but it is a government office. You can probably think of it as city hall. There would be people working here and there would be square just outside it where people would be selling stuff. Only one side of the basilica is intact and I was already impressed. I makes for great photos especially with the blue sky.
