The main reason why I chose to stay in Meknès was because it has easier access to the ancient city of Volubilis. I managed to find my way to Volubilis through a combination of public bus and taxi. The taxi was hired from the nearby city of Moulay Idriss and the driver would be waiting for me for an hour. Looking at the site of Volubilis, I was thinking if it is even possible to see Volubilis within an hour. I guess there is only one way to find out. I was quite surprised as to the number of visitors this place has. I always imagined it to be rather off the beaten track that no one would be coming here. I was pleasantly surprised to see there were a substantial number of people here. Most would be probably coming through tour groups.

Volubilis is known as an old Roman city. I didn’t know that the Roman empire reached all the way here. The city rose in prominence because of its abundant produce of olives. Because of this prosperity, people were able to build nice houses here and I would be able to see later. Eventually, Volubilis was taken over by local tribes. The Roman empire had to let it go since it was so remote and thus very difficult to defend. It eventually became an Muslim settlement before finally being abandoned in favor of Fès. These days it is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its ruins.
