Market Madness in Meknès

Crowded Markets of Meknès

I spent an hour people watching in El Hedim Square. It is the largest square in the city and it is right next to the medina itself. It seems that the square fills up as evening approaches and it becomes a total market at night. I thought this was very amusing but I decided to head back into the medina. I thought that I already know how to get back to the riad where I was staying at but I got lost again. This time, I found myself in another market. This is not unlike the the street markets I would find in Asia. Like those markets, this one is also packed with people.

I think what makes this unique is that the people here are mostly locals looking to buy stuff. I was probably the only tourist there taking photos amidst the crowd. A local lady cautioned me to take care of my belongings, and I would agree that these kinds of places are usually rife with thieves. I didn’t experience anything untoward nor did I witness anything. This it not so say there weren’t any but I guess it pays to be cautious. Most people’s eyes would be on me anyway, since I was the only tourist here so I think I would be okay. The stuff on sale was more everyday stuff like clothes and stuff for the house. This is not a tourist market but a real live one people use.
