Going to the Al-Attarine Madrasa

The medina of Fès is a massive maze of streets and alleyways. For an hour of so, I managed to get away from it all and see it in its entirety from the Marinid Tombs. I am back in the medina now and basically lost once again. I was only randomly walking at this point since I didn’t really know what else to see here. Even if I did, I wouldn’t be able to find it. I know that I am in a historic area and I think I would be able to randomly end up in some of these important places if I wander enough. One of the places which I ran into is the Al-Attarine Madrasa.

A madrasa is a basically a school, in this case it is usually a religious school not unlike non-secular educational institutions found in the west. Instead of Catholic or Christian educational institutions, you have Islamic ones here in Morocco. Fès is known to be a center of religious studies so people from all over would have come here to study. It seems that I have stumbled into one of the many mandrasa found in Fès. It actually doesn’t look like much from the outside which is the annoying part since you could just walk past it and not know that it was there. I was lucky that I stumbled into this one.
