In Europe, one would not be surprised to see a lot of churches near each other. I have been to a few historic cities in Europe and churches they are a dime a dozen. In Morocco, it can be pretty much the same. Except that the Christian churches are replaced by mosques. It is hard to ignore how pervasive the Muslim faith is here. Every few hours there would be call to prayers heard across the land. There would be people who would go on microphones in the mosques and chant their call to prayer. It can be a little unnerving at first but you quickly get used to it since it happens several times a day.

I do notice that people do heed this call to prayer. You can see them hurry to the mosque to pray. What is more obvious is that not everyone does that. In fact, I would say that majority of the people I see on the street just keep on doing what they were doing. I guess it is not really that different in the Christian world where some people would be more into church activities while others aren’t. The modern area near Fès also has a mosque called the Bab Moulay Abdellah Mosque. I actually didn’t know it was one until I saw that minaret. It was kind of difficult to see since the streets are narrow and it makes it difficult to see what is above. It is my understanding that these places are off limits to non-Muslims. I would have wanted to how it looks inside. But I think I can only see what can be see from the outside.
