Blue City of Chefchaoen

Very Blue Chefchaoen

The fact that Chefchaoen is nicknamed the blue city is probably an understatement. Practically all the walls in the city have been painted blue. Even doors are blue. Even some of the ground is blue. It really is a surreal sight to see all this color. This is probably not that surprising since I remember Marrakesh itself has most of its buildings painted salmon. Perhaps it just happened that Chefchaoen standardized on blue. It isn’t entirely clear why it ended up being the blue city but these days I’m pretty sure it is more for tourism.

You can clearly see how some paint jobs are already being washed out in the rain, especially ones near staircases. Some areas appear like they have been recently painted and the results are astounding. I never heard of needing to paint the ground, but that apparently is a thing here. The walls and even the ground is all painted blue. It is also very nice shade of blue making it even more photogenic. One could wander all around the medina to look for their own photo of the blue city but there would certainly be spots which would stand out among the rest. There are no signs pointing to these places so the best thing to do here is to just go around can explore every nook and cranny of Chefchaoen as you can.
