Bear Claws at Polebridge Mercantile and Bakery

The Polebridge Mercantile and Bakery is probably the most recognizable landmark here in Polebridge. As the name implies, it functions as a general store and, probably only recently, a bakery. The structure oozes with character as it harkens back to the times where there were cowboys. These days it is mostly tourists who come here to see how living off the grid can be. They also have a hostel in case you want to stay here so the general store helps a lot in case you don’t have stuff with you. As for the casual tourist, it is more like a convenience store with some tourist souvenirs if you want them.

However, lately people come here for something else. Their bakery produces some nice goods and one of them in particular has become quite popular – bear claws. When I first found out about this, I couldn’t imagine how they would actually sell actual bear claws there. Then again, this is bear country so maybe it wouldn’t be too far fetched that they would sell them. Turns out, bear claws are a totally vegetarian thing. It is a huckleberry pastry which is roughly shaped like a bear paw. Huckleberries are a local specialty and they are famously desired by bears. The bears would be feasting on huckleberries for most of the year before they go into hibernation. Now, you can have both, bear and huckleberries, without harming any bear in the process. As for the taste? It wasn’t really anything special, it is really pastry with some jam. It was my first time to taste huckleberry and I thought it was a bit sweeter than most jams I had. When in Polebridge, don’t miss the chance to try it out.
