Flathead Lake

Shores of Flathead Lake at Bigfork

I took a break from exploring Glacier National Park for a while and decided to go elsewhere. I thought that the weather wasn’t too great that it would be a shame to take photos of Glacier National Park all cloudy. My destination was the town of Bigfork which is south of Glacier National Park. The town of Bigfork sits on the shores of the largest lake in the area and that is Flathead Lake. Much like most of the lakes in the area, Flathead Lake was also carved out by glacier, though it doesn’t have the tall mountains along its shores to make it really pretty. The waters of Flathead Lake come from the glacial melt and it makes it one of the cleanest lakes for its size.

Unlike Lake McDonald, Flathead Lake has an active fish population and it seems that fishing is a popular activity here. I can see the allure of doing that during the summer. But at the moment, it doesn’t seem to be best time to be going our to the lake. The wind is also quite strong so there waves were quite rough. There was a boat which was trying to approach the pier but the waves were so strong it took them a while to dock. Even the people on the dock had to lie down to make sure they don’t get dragged out when they try to tie the boat down. This part of the lake is actually Flathead State Park. I guess that means it is not as important as a national park. With the weather this bad, I didn’t really feel like going around here. There is still the state park and I think I should just go around for a bit.
