Wild Goose Island

One of the main activities in visiting Glacier National Park is to travel on the Going to the Sun Road. This strangely named road is the main artery connecting West and East Glacier. During the peak season, the road is almost always open. However, it closes during the leaner months for repair ahead of the winter season. I started my trip on the Going to the Sun Road from the East entrance and I was following the shores of Lake Saint Mary, which is a larger lakes here in Glacier National Park. I love how the Going to the Sun Road was built so that you can see a lot of beautiful spots. That way you don’t have to hike just to get to the good places. One of the iconic locations at Glacier National Park is Wild Goose Island. No doubt this place has been photographed millions of times, I now have my turn to photograph it.

Closer Look at the Tiny Wild Goose Island

There is a sign pointing to Wild Goose Island. You can’t actually go to Wild Goose Island, but you can only look at it. It is actually a tiny island on Lake Saint Mary. There is a bend in the lake which allows visitor to see the lake along its length as well as the mountains which surround the lake. The result is a picture perfect scene of a small island on a lake surrounded by mountains. To top it all off, there are actually glaciers on the far away mountains. It was difficult to see but my telephoto lens was able to get a very good look at it. It seems that the mountains are a bit surrounded by clouds but I am keeping my hopes up that the great weather holds up as I make my way along the Going to the Sun Road.
