One of the most prominent landmark in the city of Lisbon is the Castelo de São Jorge. It is built on top of a hill overlooking the city of Lisbon. If there weren’t so many buildings around Lisbon, the castle would be easily seen from most of the city. The present castle is a result of continuous fortifications from the time of the Celtic tribes to modern times when a modern castle was built by the Portuguese. It certainly looks like a castle in the traditional sense. I would imagine castles to look like disney castles but there are also the castles which look more like the Super Mario Bros. type of castle, Castelo de São Jorge fits into that type.

Castelo de São Jorge or Saint George Castle is a rather strange name for a castle. This name is probably something you would expect from a church but to name a castle after a saint is probably unheard of. King John I of Portugal married Philippa of Lancaster when the castle was built. King John I decided to dedicate the castle after Saint George who is remembered to have slayed a dragon, besides, he is well known in both countries. Despite its rather fortress like looks, the Castelo de São Jorge was the royal palace for a while until there was another one built near the river.
