Belém Tower

Lisbon has the Jeronimos Monastery as the UNESCO world heritage site. It was already impressed with is as a great example of Manueline archicture. However, turns out that Lisbon has another one which is part of the list – Belém Tower. The tower is actually within the same district as the monastery however, it is built further down the road. I walked a bit to get to the location in the burning sun. It wasn’t too bad since there were a few things to see around the area. One thing I didn’t like is that there was a marina in the way. There was no way for visitors to cross to the other side and had to walk around the marina to continue.

The Belém Tower is different from the Belém Lighthouse which I have seen previously. The Belém Lighthouse is nothing but a replica and it doesn’t even work. I would have thought that tower would be the proper lighthouse. This is the second most visited site in Lisbon so visitors should do well to come here early. I arrived at the monastery mid-afternoon and because there was a long queue for ticket, I didn’t make the cut off time to visit the tower. If you can purchase your tickets online that would be better.
