Climbing the Aqueduct of Pegões

Walking the Aqueduct of Pegões

Walking the Aqueduct of Pegões

I was lucky to find an old aqueduct in Tomar. It was close to the Convento de Cristo so I decided to drop by. I was always fascinated by aqueducts and the precision needed to build something like that. I thought that aqueducts were something from the ancient Romans but it seems that they were still being built long after the Romans went away. The Aqueduct of Pegões is a sixteenth century structure which spans six kilometers. However, I didn’t know how long it was at that time. When I parked the car, I thought that was the length of the aqueduct, but how wrong was I.

It is near the parking spot. It is possible to climb one of the towers of the aqueduct. Actually, it wasn’t that tall at that that point so it was really a very modest climb. At the top, you can actually see the rest of the aqueduct snaking to its source. It was amazing to see how long it actually was. There was a door where you can actually access the top of the aqueduct itself. The duct or the pathway of the water is clearly visible. The there is actually a small area to the side which allows people to walk on the aqueduct. I actually wanted to walk the whole length of the aqueduct. I don’t think I have ever done that before however, I don’t really have time to walk six kilometers. It would have been an amazing experience to do that. It seems to get really high at certain points, I think that is worth a closer look.
