Benwee Head

Cliffs at Benwee Head

It seems like I stumbled across a hidden gem here in county Mayo. Benwee Head isn’t exactly a household name in Ireland but it is significant enough to have signs pointing to it. I was grateful that they put up these signs since there would be no way to know it was actually there. Most tourism brochures would probably show the cliffs of Moher and Slieve League in county Donegal but these places are just as impressive. The Irish name An Bhinn Bhuí isn’t exactly very readable to me but just take “bh” as the sound of “v” then you would get Benwee, or something close to it.

Some Islands at Benwee Head

Benwee Head is your typical Irish Atlantic coast and I have seen a lot of them. I guess what makes Benwee Head a bit different was how close the other cliffs felt. There are chunks of land which stick out to the see and they make great viewing platforms for the intrepid tourist. Like a lot of cliffs in Ireland, Benwee Head is best explored on foot. The land here is stable enough for exploring as long as you don’t walk too close to the edge. There are a few island here just off the coast and they make nice little decorations. I was fortunate to get here without any rain. It would be best if I got a blue sky but that would be pushing it.
