Entering the Berbie Palace in Albi

The Berbie Palace in Albi is another component of the Episcopal City of Albi UNESCO World Heritage site listing. Back in the day, bishops would be behaving more like kings where the ruled over people and even commanded armies. Those days are long gone but there are still evidence of these times left behind. The Berbie Palace is the palace of the bishop and it certainly looks like one. Just as the cathedral of Saint Cecilia looks much like a fortress. The bishop’s palace also looks a lot like its neighboring fortress. There is no point to make the palace less secure than the cathedral so the bishops palace was similarly well fortified.

It looks like I would be heading back in this part of town since the palace is another important place to visit. For some reason, there weren’t a lot of visitors here. Perhaps it was winter, perhaps it was raining, perhaps it was both. Either way, it made visiting the palace not that straightforward. For one thing, I didn’t even know how to get in the palace. There weren’t masses of tourists streaming into the palace. I only managed to stumble into one entrance which happened to be lead into the palace. There weren’t a lot of signs here at the palace, perhaps that was the intention, that is to come and explore the palace by yourself.
