Gothic Design at the Cathedral Basilic of Saint Cecilia in Albi

The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Cecilia is part of the Episcopal City of Albi UNESCO World Heritage site listing. The massive structure is one of the most visible landmarks in the city. I couldn’t help but head straight to the cathedral after seeing it from the train station. While the exterior of the cathedral is certainly impressive, is it considered the largest brick building in the world, the interior of the cathedral is also worth seeing. I was more than happy to go in the cathedral since it was still raining, I was hoping that after I am done exploring the cathedral, that rain would have already stopped.

The cathedral is dark inside, as is usually the case for gothic churches. The tall walls of the church have stained glass windows which let some light in but it is still generally dark in here. Sometimes, this makes it difficult to appreciate the true beauty of the place since it is difficult to see the detail of gothic churches. Still there is enough light to see what is in here. Immediately my eyes were drawn towards the rear of the cathedral. There seems to be a structure here and the walls or rather fences of the structure have very detailed designs. Compared to the rest of the cathedral, this design seems to stand out. It seems that it is the most important part of the cathedral since I would later find out that there is an entrance fee to visit this part of the cathedral.
