Vietnam Restaurant in Avignon

Beef Pho in Avignon

Beef Pho in Avignon

I realized that I spent three hours walking around the impresive Palais des Papes. Before I knew it, it was already lunch time. I had some breakfast earlier at the hotel but it wasn’t that special. This time, I would be looking for something special here in Avignon. As I was going around the medieval town, looking for some restaurants, I noticed a sign which said Vietnam. This piqued my curiosity. It has been ages since I had Vietnamese food and perhaps this is where I can have some. The restaurant was actually unassuming and one would probably just walk past it if you don’t see the sign. Fortunately, for me, they were open.

The restaurant had the feel of a Chinese restaurant, it had Chinese posters and signs, perhaps the owners are Chinese Vietnamese. Anyway, I finally ordered some deep fried spring rolls and of course some pho. I love Vietnamese spring rolls and these ones didn’t disappoint. They have the nice sweet sauce which is common in Vietnamese cuisine. This is certainly a very different meal compared to what I have had so far. Finally, the beef pho was just as nice. I can’t say that this one would be much better than and pho I had so far. At least, it won’t give me the impression that the pho was modified to suit local tastes. Despite it not being a French restaurant, the Vietnamese restaurant in Avignon was a nice choice for me. French did occupy Indochina before including parts of Vietnam. So there is still the French connection there.
