I have been to the medieval town of Avignon several times in the past few days. All of those times were just to have dinner. I would be coming from another place outside Avignon and I would get back to the city early evening. I would then walk to the medieval city to find dinner. This is probably the first time I have actually seen Avignon in the day and it looks fabulous. The medieval city is remarkably preserved. This is most evident in the Rue de la Republique, which is the main thoroughfare of the medieval town. The street eventually leads to the heart of the town – Place de l’Horloge.

I have a vague idea of what the name meant – clock square. As far as town squares are concerned, this one seems to be a little small considering how important Avignon was especially during the Avignon papacy. Currently, the plaza is home to a number of restaurants and hotels. I would have to agree that this is probably the prettiest place in the town. And because it was winter when I visited, they also set up an ice skating rink. I don’t think it was that cold yet but it was fun to see an ice skating rink out here.
