Leftover Ruins of the Ancient Theater of Arles

Part of an Ancient Roman Structure

Part of an Ancient Roman Structure

Having seen two impressive theaters here in France, the one at Arles wasn’t as impressive as the first two I have visited. The stage is practically nonexistent and there are no signs of the stage wall every being here, though there really was one here. What I am trying to say is that the ancient theater of Arles is a bit underwhelming. The seating area was largely intact and probably restored for use in special events but everything else was in ruins. The grounds of the ancient theater are littered with various parts of old Roman structures.

Jigsaw Puzzle for the Archeologist at the Ancient Theater of Arles

Most of the spare parts of Roman buildings were moved to the far end of the ancient theater grounds. There were parts which looks like parts of columns. They were still recognizable though. It seems the archeologists have already sorted these parts according to their criteria. It was almost like looking at a huge jigsaw puzzle waiting for someone to piece everything together. I wasn’t able to find out if these parts wee all from the ancient theater or from other parts of the city. It is a shame that the stage wall wasn’t preserved since I have seen how impressive a stage wall could be based on what I have seen in Orange.
