Entering the Roman Theater of Orange

Inside the Roman Theater of Orange

The Roman Theater of Orange is a UNESCO World Heritage site only twenty minutes away from the city of Avignon. I went there in the afternoon after visiting Pont du Gard which was also nearby. I have been to a Roman Theater in Lyon and while I thought that it was nice, I didn’t think that it was that impressive to warrant a UNESCO listing all by itself. As I was approaching the theater, I saw that there were a lot of ruins which visitors can see from the outside. I was wondering if that is the theater and at the same time, I thought that it wasn’t much to look at.

I decided to enter the theater anyway hoping that there would be a few surprised along the way. Although it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, there weren’t a lot of visitors coming here. I wasn’t sure if it was because it was low tourist season or people don’t really come here that much. I won’t be surprised if that is the case since Paris probably gets the bulk of all the tourist traffic. I’m not sure about Avignon since it is a bigger city than Orange. The entrance to the site is filled with large ruins of old Roman structures reminiscent of the blocks I found in Pont du Gard. Perhaps this place is more special than I thought.
