Marian Statues at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is certainly an impressive structure. I was surprised to know that there were actually two churches here in the location, one on top of the other. They are actually contrasts of each other, one is a triumphal basilica with ornate interiors while the lower one is a quiet and subdued church meant more for contemplation. Each have their own interesting points. The lower church, though much more normal, has an interesting display of Marian statues. I can be recalled that the basilica was built in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary may appear like museum pieces. There are images of Mary from various parts of the world. Among them are Our Lady of Loreto and even one from the Philippines, Our Lady of Peñafrancia. This statue was recognizable because of the statue was set upon a wooden boat sculpture with outriggers which are common in the Philippines. I don’t know much about the other Marian images but it is proof enough of how much importance this basilica gives to the Blessed Virgin Mary. If this is not enough proof, there is a huge sign outside the hill saying Merci Marie or Thank You Mary.
