Entrance to Malbork Castle

Entrance of Malbork Castle

I was making my way around the large Malbork Castle. It was a nice quiet day since it was a public holiday. It would have been nice if I got nice blue skies but I guess I can’t have it all. I found myself along the river. I didn’t know that the castle was actually beside the river but then realized the it makes a good natural defense. What I didn’t expect to see was a major entrance. It appears to be more important than the one I came in through earlier in the day. This one has round towers on each side and two doors.

The entrance of Malbork Castle really looks like it is part of a castle. It has the pointy towers which are stereotypical of castles. The entrance was also made out of red brick and it is really attractive. The doors look to be made of wood. It is rather strange to have two of them. I would imagine it would have been better to have a single large door much like a typical castle. What’s more the doors are elevated, or rather they appear to be elevated. I wasn’t sure what this is like that but is might be possible that the “elevation” was put in much later perhaps to keep water in case the river overflows. The middle of the entrance was a lookout point which is made redundant by the two massive towers flanking it.
