Karol Wojtyła, the man who would become Pope John Paul II, lost his family at a young age. It was at this point that he decided to consider the priesthood. Poland is a very Catholic nation and there are churches all over the place. The building right next to the apartment which Karol Wojtyła grew up in was a church. It seems there was no getting away from this. In 1946, he was ordained a priest. The archbishop sensed the genius of the new priest and sent him off to Rome for further studies. It seemed that great things are planned for him.
