Going Down the Wieliczka Salt Mine

When I was scanning through the places to visit in Krakow. One of the places which kept popping up was the Wieliczka Salt Mine. I thought this place was a big disneyesque place so I didn’t really give it much thought. However, it is a UNESCO world heritage site. This means it is that important. This made me change my mind on not paying the salt mine a visit. I don’t really know how interesting a salt mine could be but I guess I will find out. I took the public bus to get to the town of Wieliczka. It was easy enough to get there once you know which bus to take.

There were a lot of tourists who got off a Wieliczka so it was a no brainer for me to tell which station I should be getting of from. I didn’t get a seat all the way. The weather was cold but at least the bus was warm. The Wieliczka salt mine was one of the oldest salt mines in continuous operation. It actually opened in the the 13th century. I didn’t even know that salt was mined back then. Apparently, salt was a prized item back then and the discovery of the presence of rock salt was like Poland hitting the jackpot as it brought about prosperity to the area.
