Warsaw Old Town

Inside the Walls of Warsaw Old Town

I was quite pleased with myself that I made it all the way here in Warsaw. I never did consider to visit this place until I was persuaded by my good friend. Warsaw is a modern metropolis but it still retains a central old town district. I didn’t know that Warsaw wasn’t always the capital of Poland. That honor belonged to Krakow, the king moved the royal capital to Warsaw and the city saw its fortunes rise. The reason why I came to Warsaw was that it also happens to be part of the UNESCO World Heritage site list and I came here to find out why.

I spent some time walking about the old town, which was surprisingly, not that big. Much of the old town of Warsaw used to be surrounded by walls much like other old European cities. There are still walls here in Warsaw Old Town and you can see them most prominently in the north of the old town. They call it the Warsaw Barbican. It is probably here that visitors can see how much of a fortress the old town used to be like. It wasn’t that obvious to me when I first entered the old town from the south. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very good at the time as it was raining quite heavily. I can only sneak in a few shots here and there.
