Skellig Michael a remote island off the coast of county Kerry. It is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and perhaps to some people, it may seem a little otherworldly, so much that it was made a film location of the latest Star Wars film. I didn’t need Star Wars to know to come here. The people at the boat braved the rough seas to visit this remote island to get a glimpse of how the first settlers lived. It was already difficult enough to get here using a modern fishing boat but what more when it was first settled.

We removed our waterproofing wear and left it with the boat operator. They will hold on to it while we explore the island. The weather at the island was actual much rougher than it was back in Portmagee. The winds were very strong even when disembarking from the boat. Perhaps this is nothing new to people who have stayed in Ireland for a while but I think it can be a shock to people visiting. From the pier, we make our way to explore the island. There is only one way to go and people make a beeline for it. It seems that we were the first to arrive on the island. I guess you could count us lucky since the trip actually pushed through, while other operators opted to cancel their trips. Looking at the situation here at Skellig Michael, it is not surprising a lot of them cancelled.
