On the Shores of the IJsselmeer

We are visiting the city of Hindeloopen on our way back to Amsterdam. Hindeloopen is a city on the IJsselmeer, an artificial lake and one of the largest in Europe. I was quite surprised to know that the IJsselmeer is actually artificial. I guess, I haven’t been to too many artificial lakes before and I can’t tell if one if artificial or not. I guess, if you look at the map, you would notice something different abaout it. There is a line which cuts the sea off creating the lake. I could just imagine how huge an undertaking it was to create the lake.

Apparently, the lake isn’t that deep considering it used to be part of the sea. I guess when the sea levels were lower duuring the ice ages, this place was dry. The IJsselmeer now serves as the water reservoir for Friesland. That is a very large reservoir but a prudent move on their part. I often hear of water crises elsewhere and it seems to be something very far from their minds here in the Netherlands. We managed to get close to the waters of the IJsselmeer, I have no plans on bathing here knowing how cold the waters here usually get.
