Imposing Philadelphia City Hall

My first exposure to the city of Philadelphia apart from the bus station was Philadelphia City Hall. What struck me about the building was that it didn’t seemed to be “American” in style. It think it is a bit difficult to describe but I guess what I mean is that it seemed out of place. The design of city hall feels more like a French palace. The walls were high and parts of it remind me of the Palace of Versailles. The most prominent part of city hall is the central tower. It was quite thin but tall. This was meant to be the world’s tallest building when it was built. And it really was the tallest habitable building at least from 1894 to 1908.

The Philadelphia City Hall is also one of the largest municipal buildings in the United State and also in the world. It is not hard to see why just looking at the building. You can consider city hall as some kind of center. There is a plaza outside the building and there was also a dancing fountain where kids would be playing. Looking at them I can’t help but envy them since it was such a hot day. Then again, maybe just diving into the water at LOVE Park might be a better idea.
