Trinità dei Monti

Trinità dei Monti at the Top of the Spanish Steps in Rome

The Spanish Steps weren’t really very tall. One could probably climbs up to the stop in less than minute. I still don’t know why people would like to be here other than people watching. There is a church on the top of small hill which the Spanish Steps climbs. The Trinità dei Monti is a Renaissance church, but it is not as massive as the other Italian churches which I have visited recently. This has a different feel, as if the church belongs in Spain. I can’t really put my finger on why I felt that way. The church has an obelisk which stands in front of it. I always thought the presence of the Egyptian style obelisk in front of a church was strange given that it was a Catholic church.

Trinità dei Monti Restoration in Rome

Trinità dei Monti Restoration in Rome

I remember seeing an Egyptian obelisk in front of Saint Peter’s Basilica so maybe that was something which was in vogue at that time. We were at the church past eight in the evening and it has probably long closed. There was a large part of the facade which seemed to be under restoration so I doubt that it would be open at all. The church stands atop the Spanish steps and has a view of the Piazza di Spagna below. From here, we were pleased to know that there was a metro station which we took to go back to our apartment.
