Incredible Mosaic at the Dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican City

From below, visitors can already get to see the grandeur of the dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the largest basilica in the world. You can see numerous illustrations of saints and holy figures from the Holy Bible in the insides of the dome. However, there is more than meets the eye here. Visitors can climb up to the dome, for a fee, to be able to see the dome up close. Admittedly, the dome itself is already about five stories above the ground so you might not be able to see much detail from there. Apart from the dome itself, you can get to see the art that is on display here.

Mosaic on the Walls of the Dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican City

From below you might think that there were just paintings of the holy figures from the Bible, however, these are not mere paintings. These are mosaics, and very detailed ones at that. The pieces of the mosaic are thumbnail size and there must have been millions if not billions of pieces used here. I only got to see the walls of the dome which were closest to the visitors. At it was already very impressive. The illustrations on the dome itself are likewise mosaics. This is an incredible feat of design and it can only be seen up close. If you have the time, I strongly recommend going up the dome, it is surely worth it.
