Exploring Baisha Old Town 白沙

Going Home After a Day’s Work at Baisha 白沙

I wasn’t exactly enamored with Baisha Old Town. Even before I entered the town, I was already persuaded by a few local women to shell a few yuan to take photos of them in their native costume, at least I think it was a costume. The town itself has little to offer, in fact it is far sleepier there then I would thought possible. There weren’t even any shops along the main road. I think this really is a really town, not at tourist town like Lijiang. Come to think of it, I have been complaining about how too commercialized Lijiang was, as it turns out, I don’t really like its complete opposite.

There was hardly anything to see here apart from some old houses. People here were few and far in between, though they still greet you when you pass by. I was actually feeling a little wary of this place since it was so quiet. You get that feeling that zombies would suddenly jump out and swarm you. This town is as rural as it gets and it is quite bizarre considering how important this town was back then. The mural apparently isn’t popular enough to bring bus loads of people here. It is a short bus ride away from Lijiang, if they need anything they could always go to town and shop.
