I was very concerned about how high we were climbing to the summit of Shika Snow Mountain. Shangrila county is already at 3500m and a mountain at that which starts at that elevation would be so much higher, the air up there will be thinner. This would be a perfect recipe for altitude sickness. I remember how the local tourists would be purchasing canisters of oxygen to help them in case they feel giddy from the thin air. I asked my co-passengers in the cable car if there would be any problem if I go up there, naturally they said no. I was reasoning that they would not have any issues since they are already accustomed to the thinner air at Shangrila. The fact that they have to go up the mountain every so often, they will never have any problems here.

The conversation with my guide didn’t allay my fears about altitude sickness, I was getting a bit paranoid as well, was I breathing too fast, was I getting lightheaded? I tried not to think about it but I was difficult when you realize how dangerous it was. As if to allay my fears, the cable car started to descend. Descend?! There seems to be a valley of some sort here on top of the mountain. It seems to be the midway point of the cable way here at Shika Snow Mountain. I guess if you freak out because of the altitude sickness there is still a long way out.
