Further along the trail in the Imperial Palace in Shenyang was a palace where the people lived. This serves as the inner court where people can get away from everything else. The western part of this palace called the Western Palace 西宫 houses one of the concubines of Huangtaiji. Na Muzhong 娜木种 is the chosen resident of this palace. Na Muzhong used to be the wife of Chahaer 察哈尔 king Lin Danhan 林丹汗. When Lin Danhan escaped to the hinterlands of Qinghai, Na Muzhong led the soldiers in the pledge to the Jin, the precursors of the Qing dynasty.

Due to this act, Na Muzhong was rewarded by being made to live in the Imperial Palace here in Shenyang, and was given the highest title among the concubines in the Western Palace. Just like any other living area, this is a place to receive and entertain guests. There is also a Buddhist altar for prayer and sacrifices. A bit austere considering that this was an imperial palace. There were cushions in the bed and cushions for people to sit on. It makes me wonder if Na Muzhong was really rewarded or not. She may have a nice peaceful life here in the palace but she probably couldn’t go anywhere else.
