With no plan in mind, I continued on wandering in Shanghai passing through the glitzy Huaihai Road 淮海路 which is Shanghai’s equivalent of Singapore’s Orchard Road. Unlike the Nanjing Road which was arguably “too Chinese”, this has Western style shopping written all over it. I chanced upon a familiar shopping mall brand which I thought only existed in Hong Kong – there was a Times Square in Shanghai. The shops were quite high end and I couldn’t find anything interesting there. Still another reason why I like Shanghai – it seems to have everything.

I didn’t go through the malls one by one and only stopped to have a look at them. I passed throug a less developed area of Shanghai until I emerged at the gates of Shanghai Old Street. Old Streets seem to be quite in vogue in China, what with its rapid economic development. Many would long for the old days where things were simple. In this area, there are no skyscrapers, the old shophouses have been turned into more modern stores selling all sorts of stuff. Shanghai Old Street ironically has become a victim of its own success as it has become quite touristy. Regardless, I bravely walked in.
