It would seem that I am slowly expanding my network. As it happened, I have some friends in Shanghai and I decided to look them up. Well, staying with them is totally out of the question but I don’t mind meeting up with them for dinner. The first one I managed to contact was a Shanghai local and I have known him for a few years before coming here. This will be my chance to meet up with him. I managed to get his mobile just before I left just in case I have some time to spare. This was one such time.

I managed to contact him and he was genuinely surprised to know that I was here. Unfortunately, it seems that I caught in a very bad time as he just came from the dentist and won’t be able to eat much. Still, he was gracious enough to me up with me in such a short notice. We agreed to meet at a street which happens to be quite near where I was. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the restaurant he was referring to. He gave me the name of the building Gangtai Building 港泰大厦 it was at but no one seemed to know where it was. It seemed that people here are also from somewhere else.

Eventually, I found the place much to my relief. My friend had to guide me to the building since the street names here in Shanghai can be quite confusing. The restaurant’s name was Shanghai Renjia 上海人家. From the outside it seemed to be a very fancy place. I didn’t feel comfortable eating there but my friend insisted that we eat here. It seems they are famous for their Shanghainese food. Bucking the toothache, my friend ordered some signature dishes for me to try. They did not disappoint.

The fried fish was surprisingly sweet as it is the hallmark of Shanghainese cuisine. The veggie in claypot was also nice but what probably stole the show was the braised pork, the signature dish of the restaurant. As expected it was sweet but it was melt in your mouth texture and it really makes you want to have more. I just felt guilty since my friend couldn’t eat much, he did mention that normally, this dish would be his favorite. It was a great place to have Shanghainese food he told me his company would always bring visitors here. To top it all, considering that it was a high end restaurant and discounting the fact that he treated me to dinner, it didn’t really cost that much money.
