Walking on Jones Bridge

One of the famous and historical landmarks in the City of Manila is Jones Bridge. It is a major bridge connecting Chinatown to Intramuros and the resto fo the city. It crosses the murky Pasig River. Apparently, the beginnings of Jones Bridge can be traced all the way to 1701, when it was called the Puenta de Espana. In the early 1900s during the American occupation, the bridge was rebuilt and renamed Jones Bridge after Atkinson Jones, a US Congressman who pushed for Philippine autonomy.

Jones Bridge can still elicit fond memories from the old timers in Manila and it is frequently featured in local movies including, of course, jumping off the bridge and into the river. Although the bridge is not that tall, a lof of river traffic passes underneath the bridge, although the underside of the bridge was once damaged by a barge which was too high. It is one of seven bridges which cross the Pasig River. Current Mayor Alfredo Lim and repeatedly implemented lighting projects to improve the look of Jones Bridge by adding fancy lights. However, it will take more than gaudy lights to restore the bridge’s former grandeur. At least it can count on its reputation, it is probably one for the most famous bridges in the entire country.
