The Het Steen is a medieval stone fortress along the banks of the River Scheld in Antwerp. It is the oldest building in the the city and it has stood guard by the river over the centuries. The years have been kind of the fortress as it seems to be in very good condition. This obviously wasn’t the only structure in this area but its neighboring structures have already been demolished leaving only this one. The fortress isn’t very big and can be easily explored in a few minutes. It wasn’t open either as the main door was closed. I wasn’t sure if this was supposed to be open to visitors as I would only go around the grounds and not inside the castle.

Behind the castle there is a walkway to go where the river is. To be honest, the view of the river wasn’t that interesting. I think it would have been better if we were coming from the other side whee we can get a good view of the old city of Antwerp as it would have been seen from back then. I was initially excited over the idea of a castle here but this was quite boring since I can’t get in anyway. After a few photos of the Het Steen we continued on.
