The temperature at Shenyang was usually low compared to the more northern cities of Haerbin, Changchun and Ji’an. Maybe it be normal temperature variations, but was even hearing complaints from the locals about how cold it was that day. I didn’t really have much choice since I only brought some mild cold weather clothes with me. I had already dropped off my stuff at a hotel I managed to find which happened to be near Zhong Street along Xiao Xi Road 小西路, unfortunately, I forgot the name. I thought it would be easy to find a place here but it seems that foreigners weren’t convenient guests.

The first hotel I inquired with seemed to quite new, in fact it seemed to be popular especially with the young kids. Then I noticed that most of them were all young couples checking in. Upon closer inspection of the hotels photos, they seemed to be “themed”. Japanese themed. Round beds and other very un-hotel like furniture. It finally dawned to me that this was a place where young couples check in to, how should I say this, to express their love for each other. Either way, they didn’t have any room for a foreigner, it seems they needed a permit for that. I asked several nearby hotels but no luck until the last one who was willing to overlook that I was a foreigner as long as I pay.

I got myself the cheapest room for CNY 69. It was indeed tiny, very run down but it had a built-in toilet and at least it seemed to be secure. The bathroom was horrible it was wet all over. The sink was full of patchwork and the toilet’s water tank was fully exposed. How to you flush? You actually needed to touch the mechnism to flush it. Yuck. The bedroom itself was okay, for CNY 69 I can’t really complain. It has heating but I don’t think I really needed it. I was only staying for a night so I didn’t really care much about it. No one knocked at my door either so I guess it was reasonably secure. This place reminded me of that awful hotel we stayed in when we visited Emei Shan.
