Looking Inside the Basilica of Saint Procopius in Třebíč

We were in the town of Třebíč which is our next stop in our trip around Czechia. Třebíč is host to a UNESCO World Heritage site under the name Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica in Třebíč. We went to see the Basilica of Saint Procopius first which is closest to the town center. After a little climb we were at the basilica which was much larger than I expected. The Basilica of Saint Procopius is part of a monastery complex that was established here. The monastery grew powerful and wealthy which enabled them to build a full blown basilica to replace the old chapel.

We weren’t able to get in the basilica though. I wasn’t sure if it was just closed for the day but the main door was not open, but the side door has a solid iron gate blocking our way. We were still able to catch a glimpse of inside, at least from the the gate. The basilica has a gothic design. What stood out for me was that the walls were pretty bare. Usually basilicas and cathedrals would have walls painted with beautiful designs but this one was strangely bare. You can clearly see the blocks which comprise the wall. I am not sure if there is a reason for this but I think it helps making the place feel more “authentic”.
