Bear Enclosure at Český Krumlov Castle
Bear Enclosure at Český Krumlov Castle

While my friends and I weren’t able to get in to the Český Krumlov Castle because of time constraints, we were still able to get something from our visit to the castle. The view from the bridge of the castle is probably one of the best in the entire town and it is well worth going to even if you don’t intend to go in the castle itself. I plan to come back here after the sun goes down, hopefully it would be just as nice.

On the way down the castle, we saw a sign pointing to a bear enclosure here in the castle grounds. A bear enclosure? I thought that was something rather out of place here in the castle but there really is one here. In fact, there has always been a bear here since the seventeenth century. Of course, it hasn’t always been the same bear but there is actually one here. I’m not sure this is the best place to keep bears but at least they have room to move around. While this used to be a moat, it has since been used to keep the bears. I don’t know if the bears are supposed to hibernate but they seem to be quite active considering it is winter. This is a rather fascinating feature of the Český Krumlov Castle and I am not sure how to feel about it. Part of me is excited that I get to see the bear, but I don’t think they should be kept here in the first place.
