Palazzo Barbieri in Verona
Palazzo Barbieri in Verona

Piazza Bra is one of the largest squares in the old city center of Verona. How large is it? Well is it large enough to fit a full size Roman amphitheater and still have room for an open air market after that. The piazza is meant to be a grand welcome to anyone visiting the city. Imagine the surprise of a visitor to see a large amphitheater in the middle of everything. It if is meant to impress anyone, it certainly worked on me. For a piazza this significant, there will always be important buildings that surround it.

A quick look around the piazza will show you what is probably the next most prominent structure in the square – Palazzo Barbieri. The palazzo has a distinct neoclassical style which is probably the first time I have seen this in a while at least during this trip. The palace was designed by Giuseppe Barbieri. The palazzo is a relatively new addition to the piazza as it was only built in the year 1848. These days it serves as the town hall. I didn’t bother going in the palazzo anymore since I was more eager to go to the amphitheater next door. I’m sure the palazzo is important but maybe I can drop by when I’m done with the other sites.
