Altar Area at the Cappella degli Scrovegni in Padova

Before going in the Scrovegni Chapel, there was a waiting area where visitors can watch a video about the chapel. It was in Italian, so I didn’t really pay too much attention to it, but I did see how magnificent the chapel is. It actually look much better in person, this is especially true if there aren’t a lot of visitors. I almost feels like visiting the Sistine Chapel but without the crowds. You are free to take photos unlike the former but I think there are other reasons for that. The frescoes are done by the Florentine painter Giotto.

Being hosted in a chapel, the frescoes are primarily religious in theme. There is the usual depictions of the life of Christ as well as the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There were also a number of other cycles which I don’t recognize. If you can tell, I didn’t really pay much attention to the details of the frescoes. I would recognize some of the figures depicted but that was about it. I am not a student of art to know the differences between styles but I do know that this looks amazing. These frescoes were a major influence in the growth and development of frescoes in the area for the next decades.
