Overlooking the Natisone River in Cividale del Friuli
Overlooking the Natisone River in Cividale del Friuli

At this point in my visit to the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle, I was already tired from what I have been seeing. The supposed more than thousand year old Lombard Temple looked very new and what I think would have been the old and authentic structure was covered up for renovation. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed in that. There is a big chance that I was totally wrong but for now, I was just trying to go through the place. There were rooms in the monastery which honestly, didn’t seem that interesting to me any more.

The visitor path ended up bringing me outside to a ledge which overlooks the Natisone River. I was outside this monastery earlier in the day and I could already see that it was built along the river. I had a few photos overlooking the river but they weren’t that night because the sun was too low in the sky and everything else was dark. This time, it is slightly different. It has been some time since took those photos and what’s more, the monastery is much higher than where I was earlier. This allowed me to take slightly better photos of the river as well as the immediate area around the monastery. I would have wanted the river to have that beautiful turquoise color but I don’t think I will be getting it at all. I can see that the water does have a different color but you need to have proper lighting to get that.
