At the Center of the City of Palmanova
At the Center of the City of Palmanova

So far, I spent much of my visit to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Palmanova walking outside the city walls and I have completed my first walk around an actual city. Palmanova was designed to be an ideal fortified city by the Venetians. It was intended to be self sustaining as well because a fortified city needs to be. So how does it look like inside the city. The city was designed as a nine pointed star with concentric ring roads connecting the inner city. The road network is so regular that it was hard to get my bearings here because they all tend to look alike.

Perhaps it would be easier if I went all the way in and have a look. From the city gates, it is a straight line to the center of the city, which is filled with, nothing. There is a large hexagonal plaza here called the Piazza Grande. Naturally, a plaza like this would be lined with establishments and this one is no different. Not only are there restaurants here but also historical ones like the church and government buildings. It was December when I visited and I was expecting that there would be a lively Christmas market here but there was no such thing, maybe Palmanova wasn’t big enough to warrant having a Christmas market. By this time, the sun was already going down and it was starting to get dark. I think it is also time for me to look for a place to have dinner.
