Avondale Forest Park is a forest park in county Wicklow. The founder of the forest park was a proponent of afforestation. I thought that this was an interesting idea considering that it isn’t new. The founder noted that the trees were dwindling and decided to plant forests in his estate. The result is Avondale Forest Park. I am no expert in plants but it is said that there are various plants here which come various places. If you ask me, the forest alone is enough reason to visit this place. There is a nice elevated walkway which brings visitors closer to the top of the forest. It is certainly a different view compared to the view from the forest floor.

However, that isn’t all the Avondale Forest Park has. It also has the Avondale house here which was the residence of the owner. However, I think one of the most significant landmarks here in the park is a relatively new structure – Avondale Forest Park Viewing Tower. The tower is a mostly wooden structure that was intended to blend in with nature. I don’t know about that but the tower really sticks out for me. The tower was designed by Josef Stöger and you wou’d be surprised to know that there are several similar looking structures in Europe and even North America. The tower is obviously meant to be a viewing tower. There is a walkway that spirals inside the structure which terminates at the top. By creating a spiral structure, it gives visitors various viewing angles to the surrounding forest. Additionally, the spiral structure lengthens the time visitors have to the experience the structure.
