One may wonder why I would want to visit a cemetery. I am only here because this is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listing “Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica in Třebíč”. There was a significant Jewish population here in Třebíč and of course, like anyone else, they also pass away and in their case, they were buried here. The cemetery is symbol of how Christians and Jews were living in harmony. The community has been here since the fifteenth century, which means they already had a long term presence here.

I don’t know any of the personalities who are buried here some would be really old while others would be fairly recent. I would also imagine how hard it would be living in this area during the war years. The cemetery covers a surprisingly large area. The tombstones are packed closely together reflecting the number of people who were buried here – around four thousand, over the years. Some of the tombstones are still readable especially, the more recent ones. They would be written in various languages like Hebrew or even German. I honestly, don’t know much about this history of this place but the fact that there were so many tombstones here means that they have been living here for a long time.
