From the outside, I can see that Milan Cathedral is very large. Turns out that it is the fifth largest church in the world. I have visited Saint Peter’s Basilica, which is the largest church in the world, and it was overwhelmingly large. The capacities of the church that I am seeing online approach the capacities of football stadiums. According to wikipedia, Milan Cathedral and fit forty thousand people. I don’t know how many people still attend church but I doubt it would be enough to fill the church. I suspect that a lot of the people who visit Milan Cathedral are tourists though I would love to be proven wrong.

The church is so wide that there are two aisles for each side. Large churches normally have just a single aisle on each side but this one was two. This is separate from the main one in the middle. As you might expect from a church this massive, there are several chapels along the sides of the basilica. I would normally go around the chapels first before having a look at the middle. Fortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any service going on at the time of my visit, which means visitors are free to go around. Since this is not exactly a tourist site, there was little to no literature about what I am seeing in the cathedral. I would need to look them up online to understand the significance of certain parts of the church.
