As part of my final day in Milan, I was visiting the Milan Cathedral. The cathedral is dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary thus is it officially known as the Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Nativity of Saint Mary. It also happens to be the largest cathedral in Italy. I excluded Saint Peter’s Basilica which is actually the largest church in the world, but it is in the Vatican City, not officially Italy. Because of it’s sheer size, it can be hard to appreciate the beauty of the cathedral since there would be elements of the church building which would be simply too far away for visitors on the ground to see. To address this, they have a roof top walk where you can see the parts of the basilica which will definitely be not visible from the ground.

At the end of the tour, it was time to move on to the basilica itself. The basilica is probably one of the largest gothic churches that I have even been to. Cavernous would be a great way to describe it. There are several gothic pillars which support the entire structure and they seem to go on forever. I have always been impressed by these types of gothic churches but this is probably one of the most impressive that I have seen, even if we only go be sheer size alone.
